Does Your ATV Need Insurance, and Why?

All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) are diverse, four-wheeled machines that have grown in popularity around the world. They serve a purpose of recreation for when you want to rip up trails with them and a purpose of utility by attaching a snow plow to the front in winter or a trailer to the back.

Because of their versatility and the increase in prevalence, insurance coverage for an ATV is available. But unlike street-legal vehicles, many areas do not require you to have ATV insurance, leaving many unprepared for unpredictable disasters.

Eric Kyer, owner of the Kyer Agency in Dalton, Georgia, has insured several ATVs recently, both for circumstances where it is required and for those where it is not. But before you buy, understanding what ATV insurance covers what to do if insurance isn’t required is important.

What Does ATV Insurance Cover?

Comprehensive Coverage - This is the most common sense insurance coverage for an ATV. Most ATV accidents happen during primary usage; therefore, comprehensive coverage insures your ATV against damage sustained by using it to plow your driveway or haul farm equipment.

Collision Coverage - Collision coverage pertains to an accident involving yourself and an inanimate object that causes damage to your ATV, such as a fence or a tree. This type of coverage alleviates the cost to repair your ATV.

Liability Coverage - This is probably one of the most crucial insurance coverage for ATVs, especially when using it with other people. Liability coverage covers the costs associated with injury to another person or damage to their property done by your ATV.

What If It Isn’t Required?

Insurance coverage for ATVs and any other off-road vehicle is functionally similar to that of a traditional automobile; however, the requirement of having insurance is not the same. In many states, it is not required to insure your off-road vehicles whatsoever, due to the rarity that you may collide with another individual.

Avoiding insurance on your ATV may be appealing due to the cost; however, the costs will be tremendous if you cause an accident with another rider or damaged property. This is why Eric Kyer and the Kyer Agency highly recommend insuring your ATV regardless of the requirement.

Damage is subjective: if your ATV merely bumps another one, causing a dent, that’s a pretty easy out-of-pocket fix. However, if you total your ATV or worse, cause bodily harm to another individual, nothing is covered without insurance. It is always better to be safe than sorry, especially with off-road vehicles.
